Why Movement and Collaboration Matter for Entrepreneurs Working Remotely with Kacey Musick

Dear Creator,

This episode is for you if you’re feeling restless, burnt out or stuck staring at a screen all day.

Me and Kacey Musick, who is a non-binary sweetie who runs Jupiter, a web development studio where they build websites for designs in Squarespace and Webflow — talk about movement, flow state, creative work and why so many of us creative people thrive in environments we didn’t even realize were supporting us — like restaurants, theater and even team-based work.

This episode is a reminder that your career is constantly evolving. Even in times you may feel like you’re stuck.

The key insights from this episode:

Movement is essential for creative function

In the beginning of our conversation, Kacey explained to me what their “perfect”day is and it relates a lot to how movement (walking, gym, being outside) is required for focus, clarity, and emotional regulation especially in their remote work.

Walking helps with Kacey’s anxiety and is described to be one of the most effective ways to process any stress or even calm the nervous system.

Remote work removed built-in flow states

Working in restaurants and theater created natural flow through physical movements like multitasking, performance, and urgency. Sitting at a desk all day can disrupt the creative rhythm.

Service work had a mixture of performance, independence and problem solving which is similar to independent contracting.

I found this conversation so relatable as someone who’s work in the industry before and never thought about it like that.

Design and development

Kacey helps differentiate website development and design for those who might be scratching their head about it. Design focuses on visual and strategy while development translates approved designs into functional websites using platforms like Squarespace or Webflow.

They also include that website are meant to evolve alongside a business. Platform choices depend on the stage of business, capacity and your relationship to the site — not trends or awards.

Collaboration matters deeply

Kacey expressed their desire for collaborative work which is why they’ve leaned into helping designers. Working alone in remote settings can feel isolating. But partnering with designers have restored a sense of teamwork and share responsibilities.

Over reliance on AI

An interesting part of our conversation was when we brought up AI or Chat GPT. Kacey talks about how AI is useful for search or small tasks but not for reasoning, decision making or replacing human judgement. Sometimes using AI for complex problem solving sometimes created more issues than it solved.
