When Your Whole Life Shakes Up — Saturn Return, Human Design & Learning to Trust Yourself
Dear Creator,
Have you ever looked up from your life and thought… this isn't bad… but it's not mine either?
That quiet, unsettling realization is exactly where Ciara found herself at 28. She had the relationship, the career path, the logical next steps all lined up. From the outside, everything made sense. On the inside, she felt like she was on a conveyor belt. Moving forward, yes, but toward a destination she never actually chose.
Then came a trip to Mexico City with a friend. And everything changed.
Ciara is an Aquarius and a Projector. An Intrapreneur / Entrepreneur. The founder of Kiyoko Verde. She collects stories and builds communities. She is the host the Business Circle, an intimate, online membership for entrepreneurs to build together. Ciara is also 1-1 mentor for founders. She is a partner to experiment with your human design or unblock any limiting subconscious beliefs. All her work centres on you living well, wherever you are.
The Conveyor Belt We Don't Know We're On
Most of us don't wake up one day and decide to live someone else's life. It happens gradually through the degree that seemed safe, the relationship that made sense, the job that checked the right boxes. We follow the path that's presented to us, and before we know it, we're deep in a life that fits on paper but feels a little hollow in practice.
Ciara describes it perfectly: "I looked at what was at the end of it and it wasn't a bad life. It just wasn't what I would choose."
That's the thing about the conveyor belt. It's not dramatic. There's no crisis, no rock bottom. It's just this slow, creeping awareness that you've been moving along without really deciding to.
And for a lot of people, that awareness shows up right around their Saturn return.
Saturn Return: When Life Forces You to Choose
If you're between 27 and 30, or you've already been through it, you know… the Saturn return is no joke.
In astrology, Saturn return is the period when Saturn completes its orbit and returns to the position it was in when you were born. Depending on who you ask, it takes about 27–29 years. And what tends to follow is a shaking up of anything in your life that isn't truly aligned with who you are for example relationships, careers, living situations, friendships, belief systems. All of it is fair game.
For Ciara, it felt like two completely separate lives: before and after.
She talked about how she felt like there were a lot of things to shake up and basically every category switched around that time. How she lived, her relationship, job, living situation, everything.
That’s where the trip to Mexico City comes in. She went with a friend she'd barely spent time with, had a conversation at a bar with a stranger about time and possibility, and came home a different person. She ended her long-term relationship, moved out on her own for the first time at 28, and for the first time in a years, she was single, solo, and completely free to figure out who she actually was.
It sounds scary. And it was. But on the other side of that unraveling was someone she recognized much more clearly.
Shedding vs. Becoming
One of the most powerful things Ciara said in our conversation was how she didn't feel like she was becoming someone new during her Saturn return. She felt like she was shedding.
She talked about how it was sort of this rebellion of whatever was externally presented.
That's the shift. From external safety like following paths others laid out, looking ahead for steps to follow to internal trust. From scanning the horizon for the "right" answer to getting quiet enough to hear your own.
And that shedding, it turns out, was just the beginning. Because what came next was a whole new way of understanding herself through Human Design.
Human Design: The Cheat Sheet for How You're Wired
If you're not familiar with Human Design, here's the short version. It's a system that combines astrology, the I-Ching, Kabbalah, and quantum physics to map out how you're energetically designed to operate in the world. Your type, authority, profile lines, and centers all give you insight into how you make decisions, how you use your energy, how you relate to others, and where you might be working against your own grain.
Ciara found Human Design through love languages, then attachment styles, then manifestation, then Human Design. And the further she got into entrepreneurship, the more useful it became.
"There are so many 'shoulds' and 'have-tos' in entrepreneurship," she explained. "And there's still a lot of this is the way to do things. This is the algorithm, this is the funnel. And I started to question… do I have to do that? Or is that just someone else's 'have-to'?"
Human Design became her permission slip to stop homogenizing to stop assuming that what works for everyone else will work for her.
What It Means to Be a Projector (And Why It Changes Everything)
Ciara is a Human Design Projector, a type that makes up only about 20% of the population. Projectors don't have the same consistent, sacral energy as the majority of the world (Generators and Manifesting Generators, who make up about 70%). Instead, they work in bursts, absorb and synthesize information deeply, and are at their best when they're invited into spaces where their gifts are truly recognized.
But the problem is that the world was not designed for Projectors. The 9-to-5, the always-be-outputting hustle culture, the "post every day or the algorithm will punish you" mentality… none of that is built for Projector energy. And so a lot of Projectors spend years burning themselves out trying to keep up, wondering what's wrong with them.
Learning her Human Design was, in Ciara's words, "a nice exhale."
"It's like, there's nothing wrong with me. It's the system," she said. "Society wasn't created for Projectors. No wonder certain things weren't working."
For Projectors and honestly, for anyone who's ever felt out of step with the hustle that realization is everything. It's not that you're lazy or broken or not working hard enough. You're just not working in alignment with how you're designed.
How to Actually Use Human Design (Without Getting Overwhelmed)
Here's where a lot of people get stuck with Human Design: it's a LOT. There are types, authorities, profile lines, centers, channels, gates… it's basically a whole other language. And if you try to absorb it all at once, it stays as information. It never becomes a tool.
But here’s Ciara’s advice: Start with one thing. Just one.
"Even if you just use your authority — how you make decisions and your strategy — how you make things happen — those could be the only two things you need to know about Human Design."
She shared a perfect example: one of the women in her Business Circle is a Manifestor or Generator type, meaning she's designed to respond rather than initiate. When faced with open-ended questions, she gets stuck. But when someone gives her options, she knows immediately. Ciara simply suggested she ask for options instead of open questions — even for small things like deciding what to eat.
Three years later, that woman told Ciara she'd been doing it ever since. It changed how she made decisions in her business. It changed how she communicated with her partner. All from one tiny experiment.
That's the magic. You don't have to master Human Design. You just have to try one thing and see what happens.
Self-Trust Is Built, Not Decided
Maybe the most universal theme in this entire conversation beyond Saturn returns, beyond Human Design is self-trust. Which isn't something you simply choose to have. It's something you build, slowly, through evidence.
Ciara put it beautifully: "If you haven't seen anyone do something really different, how has your mind expanded to know that's possible?"
Our brains are wired for safety. For tribal belonging. For doing what everyone else around us is doing, because that's what kept us alive for thousands of years. Doing something different like following your own path or trusting your own instincts genuinely feels dangerous to your nervous system, even when it isn't.
So you start small. You take one step that feels a little scary. You see it work out. Then you take another. You build a track record with yourself. And slowly, that internal safety, that core trust in your own instincts, becomes the thing you resource from, instead of looking outward for permission.
That's what Ciara built through her Saturn return. Through solo travel. Through entrepreneurship. Through Human Design. Through all of it.
And it's available to you too.
What Would You Tell Your Younger Self?
At the end of our conversation, I asked Ciara what she'd say to the version of herself right before her Saturn return… the one on the conveyor belt, looking for the safe path.
She said that there was so much more to her than she even realized and that she’d encourage herself to trust her instinct and know that there was so much more capacity in her that she hadn’t seen yet.
If you're in the middle of a Saturn return right now, or you're starting to feel like the life you're living might not be the one you'd choose… that's for you too.
You're not behind. You're not broken. You're being asked to shed what isn't yours so you can finally step into what is.
